Breathing matters...

It truly does. And recent research would suggest (what every living human has known at least as long as they've been on the planet!) that breathing is an essential part of life! What many people don't know, is that the way you breathe affects the muscles you use during normal daily movement tasks. As an example, push yourself back a little from your computer desk right now and stand up.

Sit down again

Stand up again

Sit down again

Stand up again...

Did you notice how you breathed? The astute among you will have noted that as you stood up - you breathed in. As you sat down, you breathed out. (If this didn't happen, or if you held your breath come and see us... we'll set you right!) You can sit down again now!

Those of you that have been coming along for pilates at the studio will have realised that we are telling you to breathe the opposite to how you may have originally been taught. Traditionally, pilates and gyms teach breathing out (expiration) on effort.

Clinical Pilates is the form of Pilates that moves with research evidence on what is the safest and the best way to exercise and maximise your functional potential - whether you're an elite athlete, a debonair dancer, a multi-functioning mummy (or daddy!) or a grandiose gardener (and a whole load in between!). We ensure that the exercises are taught with a 'normal' breathing pattern. We teach breathing in (inspiration) on effort. The research says its better for your lower abdominals, which are the muscles that can protect you from back pain and improve your efficiency of movement.

Clinical Pilates is all about developing healthy movement patterns and breathing is just one of the many patterns that we can change, for the better!  The way you breathe is governed by groups of muscles. Those unfortunate enough to have problems with this most basic life function, have particular patterns which actually amplify their problem.  Come and talk to us and we'll do all we can to help restore normal breathing patterns.

New news

You may have noticed a slight name change has happened! The clinic in Raumati is now known as 'Beach Physio and Clinical Pilates'. The change is a reflection of the increasing importance of the Physiotherapy part of what we do. We don't just run classes for active people we help to get those who are inactive due to injury back out there enjoying themselves!

We're passionate about not being 'an ambulance at the bottom of a cliff', we don't want to just be there for when people hurt themselves - we want to be involved in actively stopping them from getting hurt in the first place. But there's no sense in abandoning that approach altogether. It's a simple fact of life that our bodies are not invincible. All of us will learn this at some point (generally after the teenage years have passed!) So a 'fixit' service is a necessary part of what we do. We don't claim to be able to get you to invincible (because you weren't created that way in the first place!) but we'll certainly get you back out there testing the boundaries!

And besides all that; Try saying (in your best phone voice): "Hello Raumati Clinical Pilates and Physiotherapy, how can I help you?" - it's almost like April fools every day for our beleaguered receptionists! "Beach Physio and Clinical Pilates" is much easier to say!
