Empower Pilates

Empower Pilates is based on Sara Dore’s Clinical Pilates training and her physiotherapy and sports medicine background.   Empower Pilates is a unique form of exercise that is safe, evidence based and can cater for all ages and fitness levels.   Empower Pilates is able to provide a challenge to the fittest individuals as well as to those who are just beginning a fitness programme.

Core stabilisation and muscle efficiency are the key factors identified by researchers and addressed by Clinical Pilates (for further information about Clinical Pilates click here) and also the Empower Pilates programmes that Sara has developed.   It incorporates floor work done on a mat and/or exercises on spring loaded equipment rather than free weights.   The focus is on strengthening the body’s core muscles around the abdomen and the lower back, therefore enabling the body to move more freely, creating long, lean, strong muscles and improved joint flexibility.


Pilates is based on Joseph Pilates original work.   As a child he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever.   This led him to draw on many of the training principles of the day and devise an exercise programme leading him into the world of gymnastics, boxing and circus performing.   During the First World War he was interned to work in hospitals.   He devised programmes for his fellow inmates and patients using springs attached to beds in order to maintain their health and fitness.

After the war he moved to New York and set up a studio in the 1920s whose main clients were dancers and performers.   Since that time ballet dancers have continued to use Pilates but in recent years it has been rediscovered and modernized for use by athletes, the medical profession and the general public.
